A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

The Department of Development Economics was established at Government College Mananthavady in 1998 as an undergraduate programme. This college is located in a hillock in Nallurnad village, Mananthavady Taluk, Wayanad District, just 200 meters away from Mananthavady-Kalpetta highway. The nearest airport is at Kozhikode and the nearest railway stations are at Thalassery and Kozhikode. The college is located nearby the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

 

The Department offers BA in Development Economics with15 core courses, 4 complementary courses, 2 Open courses, 8 common courses and 4 courses in additional language with a total of 31 courses and 120 credits. Micro Economic Analysis, Macro Economic Analysis, Methodology of Social Science with special reference to Economics, International Economics, Basic tools for Economic Analysis, Economics of Financial Markets, Modern banking, Informatics in Economics are the core courses. Among the core courses one is Project work, which enables the students to approach socio economic issues in a theoretical perspective. Complementary courses are Population studies, Mathematical Economics and Econometrics. With this programme 2 Open courses are provided, viz; Kerala economy and Entrepreneurial Economics. This programme focuses to enable the students to contribute to economic policy making, researches, and socio-economic- and environmental endeavors in global and local level and for other competitive fields.

POST GRADUATE COURSE

The Department of Development Economics offers MA in Development Economics  since 2016 with 15 core courses, 3 elective courses , 1  Project work  and 1 Viva voce  . Micro Economic Theory – I ,  Macro Economic Theory I , Quantitative Economic Analysis , Development Issues of Indian Economy-I (With special reference to Kerala) , Micro Economic Theory – II, Macro Economic Theory II , Development Issues of Indian Economy-II (With special reference to Kerala) ,Public Economics – I, Basic Econometrics , Public Economics II, Economics of Growth and Development  - I, Environmental Economics, Financial Economics, Global Trade and Finance , Economics of Growth and Development – II are the core courses offered by the Department .  A Project work is included in the programme which enables the students to approach and analyze socio economic issues in a theoretical perspective.  Viva- Voice is also conducted using subject experts from various colleges. Elective courses provided are  Agricultural Economics , Mathematical Economics and Health Economics .

This programme focuses to enable the students to contribute to economic policy making, researches, and socio-economic- and environmental endeavors in global and local level and for other competitive fields.  The expected programme outcomes include the study of working of economy at global, national and regional levels, a critical analysis of existing concepts and theories and alternative economic policies, to develop analytical mind and to foster research capability. The programme also aims to sensitize students on economic, social, environmental, gender and tribal development issues.

High-speed Broadband Internet with Wi-Fi Connectivity

Students and faculty of the Department have access to high-speed broadband Internet Connectivity with Wi-Fi facility which enables them to collect current data from various online sources. It affords them with an edge over others in preparing dissertations, seminar reports and assignments.

INFLIBNET Accessibility

All students have free access to the huge online source of UGC’s INFLIBNET which enables them to explore national and international journals and publications, download and print them as per requirement.

Department Library

The Department has a good collection of hand-picked books on subjects specifically related to Economics. The students can access books from this collection and it facilitates academic interaction among students and faculty members.

Smart-classrooms

All the classes are smart classes with suspended projectors and interactive white boards which can be directly connected to the internet. This facility offers students with audio-visual experience and reinforces the learning process. It also provides them with exposure to state of the art presentation techniques.

Digital Copiers, Scanners and Printers

The Department possesses high quality digital printers, scanners and printers which are accessible to the faculty as well as the students. They ensure speedy completion of project reports, hand-outs and facilitates preservation of important data.

Intercom Facility

The department is connected to all the other departments, Library, Principals Chamber, Administrative Office, NAAC room, Cooperative Store etc by means of Intercom facility.

 Sound System with Collar and cordless Microphone

The Department owns a sound system with collar microphones and cordless microphones which are used to enhance the acoustics of the classrooms. They offer students opportunities to embellish the grandeur of the department level programmes and reduce stage fear. Students are given opportunity to handle and learn the technicalities of the system and it improves their confidence level.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES/ADD-ON PROGRAMMES/OUTREACH PROGRAMMES

1.      Students of the Department of Economics actively partake of the activities of NSS, NSS and Bhoomitra sena Club in the college.

2.      Our students engage in educating the tribal dropouts under the auspices of NSS.

3.      Faculty members of the Department of Economics serve as mentors of Walk with a Scholar Programme and Scholar Support Programme.

4.      Faculty from the Department has served as Returning Officer of Students Union Election.

5.      Faculty from the Department serves as NSS Programme Officer of a unit.

6.      Faculty from the Department of Economics serves as Coordinator of the C-JOST Programme.

7.      Faculty from the Department of Economics serves as Coordinator of Career Guidance and Placement Cell in the college.

1.      A Two Day National Seminar sponsored by the Department of Collegiate Education, Kerala on “Financial Liberalization and Macroeconomic Stability with Special Reference to rupee Crisis” was hosted by the Department of Development Economics on 23rd and 24th of October 2013.

2.      A Two Day National Seminar sponsored by the Department of Collegiate Education, Kerala on “Environmental Concerns of Rapid Urbanization” was organized by the Department of Development Economics,on 14th and 15th February,2012  .

3.      A One Day National Seminar sponsored by the Department of Collegiate Education,Kerala was organized by the Department of Development Economics on “New Initiatives in Indian Financial Market” on 2011 December 19.

National seminar proposed by the Department of Dev. Economics on the topic “Affirmative Actions for Tribal Empowerment in Indian Democracy with Special Reference to Economic Development” has been sanctioned by the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, Thiruvananthapuram.

CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS RELATED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS

Economics Association

Representatives of the Economics Association are elected in a democratic fashion during the college union election every year. The Association Secretary initiates the activities of the Association, and convene meetings, Debates, Quiz Programmes etc. and contribute to the programmes of College Day. Onam celebration, publishing of Department magazine, observance of important days etc are undertaken by the leadership of the Association.

Alumni Association (FESA)

The Economics Alumni Association works in close relation with the Alumni Association of the college and contributes both financially as well as academically. The President of the Economics Alumni Association is Mr.Ratheesh.P, and the Secretary is Mr.Ashkarali. The treasurer of the alumni is Mr.Vipin. The alumni has taken initiatives to conduct seminars and quiz programmes for the students. It also has subscribed some journals to the Department.

Department Magazine

The Department of Economics has published manuscript magazines every year from its formation since 1998 with  literary,academic and aesthetic contributions of the students of the Department. So far twelwe magazines have been published. The Head of the department is the Patron and Mr.Ashkar is the present Editor of the magazine.
