NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

National Service Scheme is a student – centered programme and it is complementary to education. It is a noble experiment in academic extension. It inculcates the spirit of voluntary work among students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings our academic institutions closer to the society. It is a link between the campus and community, the college and village, knowledge and action. The overall aim of NSS is the Personality Development of students through community service. It gives an extension dimension to Higher Education system and orients the student youth to community service. National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS, was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation.

Objectives

The broad objectives of NSS are to:-

•  Understand the community in which they work;

•  Understand themselves in relation to their community;

•  Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;

•  Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;

•  Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;

•  Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities;

•  Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;

•  Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;

•  Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and Practise national integration and social harmony

Government College Mananthavady hosts two NSS units consisting of 50 volunteers from second year students and 50 volunteers from the first year students. The activities of the unit are mainly divided into two major types such as regular activities and special camping activities. Under the regular activity various programmes are undertaken in the adopted villages and college campus during weekends or after class hours. Under the special camping programme only 50% of the volunteers can participate. The camp is residential, and continues for seven days with some specific project involving local communities.

05/06/2013

      College NSS Unit observed Environmental day by planting different types of trees and plants.For the activities 47  volunteers participated.PrincipalT.N.Ravi ,Programme Officer and other teachers were given proper guidance.

01/07/2013

     An orientation class was organized for the NSS volunteers. Class started at 2.00 pm ,Programme Officer took classes.A total of 146 students participated in the class, in which awareness about National Service Scheme were given.The class winded up at 4.00 pm

11/07/2013

      NSS observed Population Day.A seminar was conducted in the college with the assistance of ‘Arogyakerala’,Wayanad.Dr. V.Jithesh(Dist.Medical Officer Mananthavady ) and  other eminent faculties  handled different sessions mentioning the impact of population explosion and how it can be controlled. The Seminar was ended at 1.30 pm. All the students of the college participated in this session.

         A full day regular camp was conducted in the college. Camp started at 9.30 am .College Premises were cleaned. A total of 75 volunteers took part in the camp.The camp activities was over by 3.30 pm.

03/08/2013

        An awareness class was organized in the college about the consequences of usage of Panmasala.Sri.A. Johnson Joseph , Block co-ordinator ,Arogyakerala took classes .The class started at 2.00 pm and ended at 4.00 pm.

06/08/2013

      NSS unit observed Hiroshima Day. The pledge against war was taken by all the NSS volunteers. A Poster display was organized in the college and a message was given by the Programme Officer.

07/08/2013

            A camp is organized in the college for planting trees in the premises of the college. The various types of plants supplied from the forest department are planted in and around the college campus.A total of 72 volunteers took part in the camp. The camp activities were over by 1.00 pm.

 

11/08/2013

       A full day regular camp was conducted in the college. Camp started at 9.30 am .College Auditorium and premises were cleaned. A total of 82 volunteers took part in the camp. The camp activities were over by 3.30 pm.

14/08/2013

        NSS unit organized a quizz competition on the occasion of Independence Day at the college Auditorium.Students are grouped into teams and the Sri.Manoj( HOD of Hindi) asked questions and the winners were given prizes

 

17/08/2013

       A legal awareness class is organized in the collegeAdvt.Rasheed (Court,Mananthavady) took classes. Various topics like anti-ragging,cyber crime, legal protection available in various situations etc.areorganized.After the class a very good interactive session took place.

 

27/08/2013

        A full day regular camp was conducted in the college. Camp started at 9.30 am .College premises were cleaned. A total of 77 volunteers took part in the camp. The camp activities were over by 3.30 pm.

 

06/09/2013

      NSS volunteers have given leadership and assistance in the Onam festival function of the college. The programmes were started at 9.00 am and ended at 4.15 pm . All the students and teachers have participated in the whole function

    NSS vulunterrs participated in the  district level pookkalam Competition foe college students  held ai District Industris Centre ,Muttil and won third prize.

24/09/2013

NSS  day celebration was done at the college .A new NSS unit is received and the volunteers are very happy with that.Some cultural programmes are araanged as part of this.

28/09/2013

        A full day regular camp was conducted in the college. Camp started at 9.30 am .College premises were cleaned. A total of 97 volunteers took part in the camp. The camp activities were over by 3.30 pm.

02/10/2013

       On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi a regular camp is organized in the college .Total of  86 volunteers partipated in the college.2 NSS volunteers participated in the State Level Inter university workshop-sevagram held at Marthoma Youth Centre ,Adoor,Pathanamthitta on 2&3 October 2013.

19/10/2013

            5  volunteers donated blood to a patient in the Govt. Hospital,Manathavady.

 In addition to this NSS volunteers went to the adopted village everyday evening to take classes to the students of that colony.
