The Department of English was instituted at Government College Mananthavady in 1981 along with the establishment of the College. The college commenced Under Graduate Programme in English Language and Literature in 1993 paving way for the formal setting up of the Department of English. This is the only Government College in Wayanad district affiliated to Kannur University that is offering BA in English Language and Literature. 18 batches have graduated from the department until 2013. Our students have become the ambassadors of the rich legacy and heritage of the culture and education imparted by Government College Mananthavady across the world. Since its inception, the department has been playing a key role in bettering the English education of the people of Wayanad, augmenting the reputation of GCM and enhancing the employability and worldview of the students.

Vision for the Future

The department looks forward to materialize the following ideas in the course of five years.

1	Commence MA programme in English
2	Elevate the status of the department as a Research Centre.
3	All faculty members should earn PhD degree and Research Guideship
4	Engage in Major/Minor research Projects of UGC
5	Publish academic papers/articles with increased enthusiasm
6	Develop the department blog as a full-fledged interactive portal for discussions and discourses.
7	Begin an e-journal with ISSN and International Board of Advisors
