WORK EXPERIENCE

1.ISRO sponsored research Laboratory, Division of Electronics Engineering, School of Engineering, Cochin University of Science and Technology

Cochin-22, Kerala, India  (From 2005 to 2014)

Digital Signal Processing (Specialization: Digital Image processing) being my research interest, I worked on the following Project and completed my research work.

The project explores the area of still image compression. The image compression techniques can be broadly classified into lossless and lossy compression. The most common lossy compression techniques are based on Transform coding, Vector Quantization and Fractals. Transform coding is the simplest of the above and generally employs reversible transforms like, DCT, DWT, etc. Mapped Real Transform (MRT) is an evolving integer transform, based on real additions alone. The project aims at developing new image compression techniques based on MRT.

Most of the transform coding techniques employ fixed block size image segmentation, usually 8×8. Hence, a fixed block size transform coding is implemented using MRT and the merits and demerits are analyzed for both 8×8 and 4×4 blocks. The N2 unique MRT coefficients, for each block, are computed using templates.  Considering the merits and demerits of fixed block size transform coding techniques, a hybrid form of these techniques is implemented to improve the performance of compression.  The performance of the hybrid coder is found to be better compared to the fixed block size coders. Thus, if the block size is made adaptive, the performance can be further improved. In adaptive block size coding, the block size may vary from the size of the image to 2×2. Hence, the computation of MRT using templates is impractical due to memory requirements.  So, an adaptive transform coder based on Unique MRT (UMRT), a compact form of MRT, is implemented to get better performance in terms of PSNR and HVS.

The suitability of MRT in vector quantization of images is then experimented. The UMRT based Classified Vector Quantization (CVQ) is implemented subsequently.  The edges in the images are identified and classified by employing a UMRT based criteria.

Based on the above experiments, a new technique named "MRT based Adaptive Transform Coder with Classified Vector Quantization (MATC-CVQ)"is developed. Its performance is evaluated and compared against existing techniques.  A comparison with standard JPEG & the well-known Shapiro's Embedded Zero-tree Wavelet (EZW) is done and found that the proposed technique gives better performance for majority of images.

PROJECTS/TRAINING

A spot billing software system for Kerala State Electricity Board  (Feb 2001-Jul 2001).

This project was done for Kerala State Electricity Board, Pathanamthitta Subdivision as a part of my Graduate program.  This software simplifies the billing calculations of Pathanamthitta subdivision of KSEB.  This project also calculates the salary calculations of all the employees working in that sub division.  Front end was designed using VB and back end was designed using MS Access.

Simulation Model of a Hybrid MC-CDMA/SLOTTED ALOHA Protocol For Wireless  Multimedia Communication (Feb 2003-Jul 2003).

This project was done as part of the M Sc curriculum.  In this project we have    simulated almost all protocols used for both wired and wireless communication. These protocols include-Aloha, Slotted Aloha, CSMA, CSMA/CD, and CDMA and developed a new protocol for wireless multimedia communication.  That protocol was named "Hybrid MC-CDMA/SLOTTED ALOHA" protocol.

Library Information System (Jan 2004-Aug2004).

This project was developed for 'Mannam Memorial NSS College, Konni, Pathanamthitta'.  In this project VC++ was used as front end and MS Access as back end.

Micro controller based rotating advertisement Screen (Sep 2004-Mar 2005).

In this project our team used the microcontroller 8951.  The speciality of that Screen was that it is programmable.   Inorder to convert it in to a programmable version, we interfaced a Hex key board and LCD monitor.  Before incorporating 8951, we had done the testing using VC++ and CRT monitor.

Micro controller based Water level controller of the over head tank (Mar 2005- may   2005).

The intension of this project was to turn on the motor when the water level is below certain limit and turn off when crossing the above limit.  The micro controller 8951 was used for this project.

Digital Image Compression (July 2005- 2014).

The aim of this project is to develop an image compression technique that can be used to reduce the time and bandwidth required to transmit images by transmitting only compressed images and to save memory spaces by storing only compressed images.  This project is in the developing stage.  Here the compression is done without loosing any information from the image.  The tools used in this project are MATLAB, VC++ and DSP.
