EQUAL OPPORTUNITY CENTRE

The Equal Opportunity Centre has been functioning in the college from the academic year 2009-10 under the XIth    plan fund utilization programme. It functions with a view to the effective implementation of policies and programmes for disadvantaged groups, to provide guidance and counseling with respect to academic, financial, social and other matters and to enhance the diversity within the campus. It ensures equity and equal opportunity to the community at large in the college and brings about social inclusion. It functions to create a socially congenial atmosphere for academic interaction and for the growth of healthy interpersonal relationships among the students coming from various social back grounds. The centre looks into the grievances of the weaker sections of society and suggests amicable solution to their problems. Special care is given to the upheaval of SC/ST/OBC/MINORITY, PH, WOMEN and other deserving class.

An advisory committee consisting of 8 members with principal as Chairperson, vice principal as General Convener and one Co-Coordinator from the teaching staff monitors the functions of the cell. The committee members are;

PROGRAMMES ORGANIZED UNDER THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY      CENTRE  (2012-13)

During academic year 2012-13 the following programmes were organized under the Equal Opportunity Centre of the college.

Time management in Examination (26/11/2012)

In order to provide guidance to the management of time when appearing for examinations a class was organized on Time Management and Examination on 26/11/2012. The class was led by Mr. Denny Joseph, HOD of English of this college. 31 students from the English Department took part this class. The class was very interesting and informative to the students.

How to Avoid Stress in Examination (26/11/2012)

In order to avoid stress and other problems when appearing for examinations an awareness class was organized. Mrs. Suma, Asst. Professor of Economics led the class. 26 students participated in this class.

Introduction to the Choice and Credit Semester system(26/11/2012)

          For giving awareness on CCSS a class was organized for the students of ST category of the college. Mainly the class was intended for the students of first year classes. The class helped them to know the features of Grading patterns, method of assessment, weightage system and method of questions. Mr. Abdul Salam, HOD of Commerce led the class. He took the class effectively as being the coordinator of CCSS in the college.  54 students participated in this class.

Personality development Programme &Student Counseling

          It was a matter of prestige      for the Equal Opportunity Centre of the college to have opened a student counseling centre. The counseling programme aimed to the psychological counseling to the students who were suffering from stress and other problems. It also aimed to the personality development of the students. The cell functioned from 30/09/2010 as a permanent institution. During this academic year Sr. Smitha Joseph, MSc. Psychology served as the Counselor. 86 students got the benefits of the centre in this academic year.

Class on Legal Rights of SC/ST and Right to Information Act (18-01-2013)

          Class was organized for giving legal awareness for the SC/ST students on their rights and privileges. A second session of the class was organized on 18/01/2013 which high light various provisions of the Right to Information Act. Advocate Shebin George, Mananthavady handled the class. More than 16 students participated in this class. The students very actively participated in each session.

Class on Goal setting in life& Motivation    (24/01/2013)

A class was organized for motivating students for achieving their goals in life. The class was organized for the students of SC category. 13 students from SC category participated in this class. Another session of these class attended 26 students from various category.Jose Mathew, HSST in Social Work, GVHSS Mananthavady, led the class.

Photography class & training (11/03/2013, 15/3/2013, 16/03/2013)

Three days training programme on Photography and basics of camera operations was given to the interested students of this field. The class provided the students with skills to find a part-time job in accompaniment with their studies. Sri Sairam, Asst. professor of Philosophy, Govt. College Chittur and Santhosh Karthikeyan were the resource persons of the programme. 30 students got training in camera operations. The classes were conducted on 11/03/2013, 15/03/2013 and 16/03/2013.

Scope and Opportunities in Economics (16/03/2013)

A class was organized for the students of Economics department which highlighted the scope and opportunities in Development Economics. Sri Haris P.M., Asst. professor of Economics, Govt. College, Kottayam led the class. 26 students participated in this class. Mrs Rajimol, HOD of Economics, Mr. Shanavas, and Mrs. Suma, Asst. Professors of the department also participated in this programme.

Communication skills in English(19/03/2013)

An interactive programme organized for improving the communication skill in English on 19/03/2013. K. Ramachandran, Asst. Professor of English, St. Mary’s College Sulthan Batherry led the class. The HOD and other faculties of the English department also attended the class. 26 students got the benefits of the programme.

 Class on How to face an  Interview(19/03/2013)

          For equipping students to face an interview, a class was organized on the topic How to Face an Interview on 19/03/2013. The classes were mainly intended for the students belonging to SC Category. Dr. Ragesh Kalia, Associate Professor of Hindi, Mary Matha Arts & Science College, Mananthavady led the class. Mock interviews and demonstrations were conducted. The students got familiar with the stages of interview and measures to be taken before facing it.

Health Awareness programme for female college students (20/03/2013)

A Health Awareness Programme was conducted for the female college students on 20/03/2013. Sr. Elsy Jose S.H. (MSc Nursing), Vice-Principal, Assumption School of Nursing,  Sulthan Batherry led the class. Nutritious and Gynecological problems of females came under the discussions. 27female students participated in the class. The class was organized as a part of women empowerment, one of the aims of the Equal Opportunity Centre. Smt. Sheeba K.A., Asst. Professor and coordinator of the programme gave an introductory speech on the topic.

Introduction to SPSS (25/03/2013)

In order to provide ICT awareness among the students a computer class was conducted on the topic Introduction to SPSS on 25/03/2013. Jabir K, GHSS, Adoor led the class. The class had two sessions, the first session dealt with the theory part of SPSS; and the second session considered the practical side and students got training in the use of SPSS software. 18 students got training in the SPSS. Abdul Salam, HOD of Commerce, and other faculty members from Commerce Department facilitated the successful completion of the theory class and lab session.

 Short term Computer Course for the SC/ST students

A short term computer course was organized for the students of first year degree classes who belonged in the SC and ST category. Mr. Santhosh K. Das was the chief instructor of the training programme. The classes were conducted from 02/02/2013 to 24/03/2013 on all holydays. Students were provided lab facilities on all working days too. A time table in this regard was framed and lab facilities provided on 9.AM to 10 AM and 1.15 PM to 1. 45 PM. The students were grouped into three batches for getting individual attention while doing lab classes. Mrs. Sheeba K.A. and Mrs. Litty R helped the students in doing lab classes during working days. 18 students got training on Office Automation. The syllabus of the course included the Fundamentals& Introduction of Hardware & software, troubleshooting and assembly, Office Automation with Microsoft Office Package, Internet in academic pursuit, and Introduction to Photoshop. Notes on these topics were prepared and distributed among the students. After the course an examination was conducted and certificates were issued.
